THE CAUSES OF OBESITY: PHYSIOLOGICAL CRAVINGS
It should be noted that not all food cravings are emotionally related. Some are our body's way of telling us which nutrients we need. For instance, chocolate cravings are often a symptom of a magnesium deficiency. Our bodies use up a lot of magnesium when we're under stress, and as a result we can become magnesium deficient. Chocolate is a high-magnesium food, and hence we crave it. You may not actually want the sugar or the chocolate flavor at all but rather the minerals within the chocolate itself.
Cravings for sugar can sometimes indicate a blood sugar imbalance connected to an overgrowth of Candida albicans. Women often experience vaginal yeast infections, but yeast can overgrow throughout the body in both men and women. Many times this condition stems from a diet that contained a lot of drugs, sugar, or alcohol in the past. To conquer this common craving, it's best to see a healthcare practitioner who can run a test to see if an overgrowth of Candida is present. Or follow an anticandida program, like the one described in Dr. William Crook's book, The Yeast Connection, and see if the sugar craving goes away. By eating as though you have a blood sugar imbalance, you may be able to overcome your desire for sugar. We will explore some of these physiological cravings in greater detail in the upcoming chapters.
